πŸ‘οΈ HOW WE SEE

The Path of Light

Follow a beam of light from the cornea to "seeing" it in the brain.

πŸ” 4 COMMONLY CONFUSED CONDITIONS

Refractive Errors at a Glance

All about where light focuses relative to the retina.

πŸ‘‚ HOW WE HEAR

The Path of Sound

From vibration in the air to a sound "heard" in the brain.

βš–οΈ Balance: The inner ear's semicircular canals handle equilibrium separately from hearing β€” hairlike receptors embedded in a gelatin-like material shift as the head moves, sending position signals to the brain.

🩺 CONDITIONS TO KNOW

Diseases & Disorders

Filter by system, then tap a card for description, signs/symptoms, etiology, and treatment.

🩻 HOW WE TEST THE SENSES

Diagnostic Tools

The instruments and tests you'll hear referenced constantly.

βœ‹ THE SKIN'S 7 RECEPTORS

The Sense of Touch

Each receptor type perceives a different sensation.

πŸ‘΅ CHANGES ACROSS THE LIFESPAN

Age-Related Sensory Changes

What tends to shift as people get older.

Vision: Children often start myopic (nearsighted) and may change by adulthood. Older adults develop presbyopia (can't focus up close); arteriosclerosis/atherosclerosis, cataracts, and glaucoma become more common with age.

Hearing: Children typically have acute hearing; older adults gradually lose hearing (sometimes needing a hearing aid). Young children are more prone to otitis media due to horizontally-positioned eustachian tubes.

Touch & Taste: Both senses tend to dull with age. Reduced touch sensitivity means older adults must be extra careful with hot items and may not notice injuries right away. Numbness/tingling in the fingers can make fine tasks harder.
